ugh… migraine

This has not been a great week. I have had yet ANOTHER GI appointment cancelled on me at the last second. This one wasn’t even rescheduled. I was told to phone back and then for THREE DAYS I tried to reach the secretary and finally, after pissing another person off enough because she kept having to take my messages, I get a phone call back and told to CALL BACK AFTER SEPTEMBER 10 and maybe then she can help me reschedule the appointment.

Bloody hell.

And I have a killer migraine today and that sucks because it’s not even the right time of the month for my migraines to happen and I even wore my awesome shoes and shirt today. I had to change to my flip-flops now because I was too dizzy to be in heels.

I want to go home.

Thank goodness for long weekends, eh?

Oh, AND my iBook is back to not connecting to the internet again. Lovely. Stupid expensive piece of crap.

i’m an evil little secretary

Muahahahahahhahahahahaa!!

Go away for almost the entire month of August, will you? Well, then! You’ll just have to like the redecorating I have done to your new office. Muaahahahahah!

what evil secretaries do on Friday afternoons when no one is around…

how the boss incorporates his new desk into his work day

[Can I just say how much I love the people I work with? And how fortunate I am to have a Big Boss who has a sense of humour and thought this was funny and that he should keep his desk like this for a while - even through meetings he had today? Can I just say that I work with awesome people? It should have been much more elaborate, though I knew there were meetings scheduled for early morning on his first day back, so I didn't go too overboard to make it easier to take down, but noooo! I was allowed to leave it like that. I should have brought in more stuff. Funny, I seem to have a ton of Tinkerbell paraphernalia in my house. Who'da thought?!]

mcgill metro evacuated! (now with 100% more photos!)

I have been watching the following through the window at work. I even took photos, you’ll have them when I get home!

UPDATE (from home at 10:40pm) below this blurb are the photos I took from my office window. I spent most of the day watching this. The photos were taken at 12:40 p.m. and the fire trucks had already been there for over an hour!

McGill metro evacuated

Possible ceiling could collapse

The Gazette

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the downtown McGill metro station this afternoon and a one-block section of de Maisonneuve Blvd. was closed to traffic after gaping cracks appeared in the ceiling of Montreal’s famed underground city.

Fearing the road would collapse, engineers shut down  the metro’s green line, evacuated nearby buildings and cordoned off the roadway creating traffic chaos in the city center.

The underground city around The Bay department store was evacuated as well as the basement and first floor of the department store.

“We were worried that if the road collapsed it would cause a shock wave that would flow into The Bay,” Gilles Ducharme, chief of operations for the Montreal Fire Department, said.

He said engineers from the city, Hydro-Quebec and the transit commission were evaluating the cracks.

He said he had no idea how long the evaluations would take, what caused the cracks or when the metro and roadway would be reopened.

“The cracks may have happened just today or they may have been there for a few days,” he said.

“If they have to shore up the road it could take days, maybe all of next week.”

Firefighters were called to the underground mall and metro at 1:30 p.m. after employees working for The Bay discovered water leaking through the ceiling of the underground mall.

Their concern turned to  panic when they noticed a large crack had formed along the ceiling under the north side of de Maisonneuve.

“It looked like the ceiling had fallen about one inch,” Ducharme said.

Prof. Saeed Mirza, a McGill University structural engineer, said the engineers likely will have to excavate the road in order to thoroughly assess the problem.

“A one inch displacement is very serious,” he said.

He noted that the mall is only about 40 years old.

“This kind of problem should not have occurred,” he said.

“I have noticed cracks in other metro stations at Peel Street and the Bonaventure station,” he said.

“Usually this isn’t a problem unless you don’t have steel reinforcement.”

The city has recently used large jackhammers and heavy equipment to excavate part of the city block behind The Bay to construct a bicycle path along de Maisonneuve. But Mirza said this should not have caused the cracks.

“There’s plenty of heavy traffic going over this road every day,” he said.

The underground city drops two floors beneath the road with the shopping mall over the metro tunnel.

The ceiling of the first floor  is about five meters below the road, Ducharme said.

Between the road surface and the mall are layers of asphalt, concrete, aggregate and then concrete girders sitting on support posts. There are also water pipes, gas lines and electrical wiring between the road and the mall.

Mirza said one possible cause is that earth between the roadbed and the mall may have shifted.

“Or it could be a structural problem that goes right down into the metro,” he said. “That would be very serious.”

it’s like watching a train wreck

I generally never talk about celebrity stuff on this blog. As much as I used to occasionally enjoy my trashy magazine reads while bored (US, In Touch) I don’t pick them up anymore because it is always the same ol’ same old. And quite frankly it’s making me ill.

  • Paris Hilton – served 23 days in jail
  • Nicole Ritchie – served 82 minutes in jail, 35 of which were actually in a cell – a PRIVATE one
  • Lindsay Lohan – to spend one whole day in jail

Seriously? When is someone going to wise up and stand up to these trashy, useless, waste of space people? How can people just let them get away with all these DUIs and drug possession and whatnot and not DO anything? Are they just waiting for them to end up dead and that will solve the problems?

Does anyone remember when celebrities were classy and respected? Or at least not such a joke. And does anyone remember when celebrities were celebrities because they actually DID something? Act! Sing! Not just be ditzy socialites who came from money? What the hell?

I am so tired of hearing about Paris, Nicole, Lindsay and the crazyass Britney Spears. It’s making me sick. You can’t turn on the tv, open a newspaper or surf the internet without hearing about these people. And here I am adding to that. This will be the last you hear of it from me though.

it’s thursday, so of course the ibook won’t cooperate

I seriously hate this piece of crap machine. What the hell is wrong with it? *kicks laptop* Oh, well.

Five-day work weeks are the pits. Just sayin’. It’s not fair to taunt us every summer with 4-day weeks and then take them away when school starts back up. I am not cut out for 5-day work weeks.

I know, whine, whine. Shut up. I’m spoiled. Yadda, yadda.

So I phoned yesterday to make my driving test appointment. Turns out I can’t make the appointment because it’s been three and a half years since I took the theory test part (the one I needed to pass for the learner’s permit). Well. Lovely. Now I have to re-take the bloody theory test and do you think I know where my books are? Hell no! The test is scheduled for September 14 at 2:00 p.m.. I have a month to find the books, read them and remember what the hell I have read. Once I pass the theory test I can phone and book an appointment for the driving part. On the bright side, I have more time to practice the driving (which is a good thing, since I haven’t really driven all that much) but the dark side (?) is that I am terrified that I am not going to pass the theory part again. I suck at tests, I am sure the fact that I passed on the first try last time was just a fluke. Plus I had many hours of practice tests at the driving school – which I don’t have now. I am not about to shell out $450 just to take practice tests in the next 4 weeks. Sigh.

This driving thing is overrated. I somehow feel I shall never get that licence. Boo.
