it’s 23°C out right now and i’ve been up since 8:45 am

I tried to get Shawn to let me install the a/c last night in the bed room because it was staying in the double-digits over night. But he wouldn’t let me. I also need to remember to phone to get an estimate for installing the central a/c thing for people without vents in our living room. (You know those units that have an outside part and an inside thing up on the wall and it’s like central a/c but not?) Anyhow it’s hot today. And sunny. And even though it’s a little too warm for me, I have been making the most of the day (until this last hour when I’ve been goofing off on the computer.)

At 9:00 am I was doing this:

Yes, those are pancakes on the barbecue. They turned out pretty good – the occasional over-cooking on one side. But other than that I will do this again. This recipe that I got from Carissa makes good barbied pancakes! I put chocolate chips in them again, only whereas last time I had to many, this time I had too few. Grr. Some of the last ones didn’t even have any in them.

And I learned a trick to nice round pancakes – use the ice cream scooper! And this is an old one that my grandparents had when I was a kid. So it was nice to use it for something (I don’t like ice cream so we never have it unless my mother-in-law is coming for dinner, because that’s the only dessert type thing she eats.)

I have three pancakes left over in the fridge and I’ll be snaking on them later (tomorrow, perhaps?)

I currently have all the towels and bathroom rugs washed and hanging on the line. The living room windows and screens have been washed down, scrubbed and are now actually see-thru once more. Dishes are washed (thanks to Shawn) and I think I am ready for a nap. ;)

I hope everyone is able to enjoy their Saturday today!

i’m all set

I got what I need, how about you?

Apparently my returning to the office after lunch with both of these things in my little bag amused my coworkers. I said “I got my book. I got my Vodka. I’m all set!”

I went out to get the book and the friend I was with was shocked that I did not have any Vodka in the house to put in my Clamato Virgin Caesars. In fact, aside from the half a bottle of Jameson’s I have in the kitchen I don’t think we have any other alcohol in the house right now. So she made me stop in the SAQ and pick some up. I got a tiny bottle – and it’s plastic so I knew I wouldn’t manage to break it before I got home. Ha.

They fit together perfectly in the little bag I got from the bookstore.

(This little bottle is going to last me a looooong time at the rate I drink alcohol.)

the vegetation war rages on

Wages on? Is it the war wages on? Stupid idioms.

Anyhow, today I recruited Shawn to my cause – Dig Up Evil Vine Roots. The palms of my hands are bruised and swollen from Friday’s adventures in gardening and I am just not strong enough to have dug up that stupid tree-like root. Shawn almost wasn’t either but – we got it!

Here is half of it. The root is so thick and goes so deep, we’re actually worried it’s made its way into our foundation. I was going to leave the middle vine as some sort of “greenery” but once we had the “oh, crap! The foundation!” thought, away went the middle vine!

This one I let Shawn tackle all on his own. It was the largest clump but it came out pretty easily. This one also has thick, deep roots that will come back to haunt us. But for now it’s dead-ish.

Pile o’ roots. Stupid blasted roots. And you’ll note the tissue box on the steps as well. My allergies are bad enough right now that I am quite foolish to be messing with the vegetation rather than staying away from it. But I want this stuff out of my yard!

Jinx was helping us recycle our vegetation. Such a good boy.

And after an hour of digging and root-pulling, we finally got this front garden part to look slightly better. There are still random roots taunting us by sticking up, but damn it! We can’t seem to get them all.

What?

So now I just have to figure out what I want to do in the front. I want it simple and clean and not something that will spread all over high heaven – I have neighbours to think about, too. It’s not fair if my property starts to invade theirs. I’ll be taking extra special care to look at all the flowers and plants that stores have to offer right now. And as long as my weekends are nice and sunny I can hopefully get this done in no time!

And I’d like to extra-specially thank Shawn who couldn’t care less about this sort of thing and stayed out there with me much of the late morning helping me shovel and pull up roots that I wasn’t strong enough to tackle on my own.

Oh, and if you’re going to suggest I plant some random thing that is apparently a flower, only I have to google to find that out – can you please tell me it’s a flower or plant in advance? That way my father won’t leave snarky comments in my posts (hahaha! Of course that comment cracked me up, but we’ll pretend he doesn’t read this and won’t notice I said that! ;) ).

Thank you!

i’m at war with vines and roots

I have one wicked migraine which I believe is mostly sinus-related (although it’s the right time of month for the regular kind) but boy was it worth it.

I was home today in case I was needed in the setting up for the reception after my grandmother’s funeral tomorrow. However it turns out we can’t get into the church basement hall until 9AM tomorrow. Oh, well. I was productive today anyhow.

The alarm went off at 8:00 am and Shawn was getting ready for work. I got up, though I thought I would perhaps go back to bed once he left. That didn’t happen though. A little after Shawn left at 8:30 I was out in the front yard digging up those infernal vines that have taken over the front of my building. I fought with the roots and although I only managed to get one out (more or less) and I need Shawn’s help for another one. I feel better.

Exhibit A – a pile of dead vines that I have to tie up before I toss out. Only do you think I have twine left? Of course not. So they are sitting there at the top of the driveway until Shawn gets home and I have him help me figure something out (or drive me to get twine).

Exhibit B – That log-looking thing on the left? That’s a ROOT from one of the 3 vine plants that were there. I can’t move it. I almost broke the shovel trying to dig it up. It’s staying there until my strong husband can help me get rid of it. I nearly killed myself getting the root out from the plant next to the steps.

Exhibit C – I started digging up the ridiculous amount of vegetation that the previous owner had planted. I really don’t like it once everything grows and it’s starting to look ugly. My plan is to dig up what I can and replant little, simple things. Not have an entire botanical gardens on my front lawn. The flaw? Well that entire thing is a giant orgy of roots and I can’t break through most of them. Argh! I did as much as I could this morning before my allergies got the best of me and while the front was in the shade, but boy do I hurt now. I tried to dig up some more this afternoon but my migraine is too bad and every time I used the shovel I felt like my eye was going to burst. So I stopped for now.

Jinx was wiped out from all the gardening in the front, so he went out onto the deck to nap in the sun. What a wuss. (Ok, so I also put together my lounge chair and sat in in for a half an hour in the warm sun and took photos. What?)

Oh, and earlier than usual – my garden faeries have come out! See them at the edge of the steps on the left and right? don’t mine that werewolf in the foreground, he’s a friendly one.

Last year at this time we didn’t think we’d ever see grass. Because we had an early thaw and a spring on time I am ahead of myself for the digging up of things. I wasn’t able to do this stuff until May in 2008 but then I went and broke my toe!

It didn’t stay sunny that long today, like they originally called for, so I am glad I went out as early as I did. I got a lot done and now it’s overcast and really windy. It’s supposed to rain and drop like, 10 degrees for tomorrow.  Although I suppose rain is fitting for a funeral. I do prefer the sun, personally.

thanks to carissa, we had a delicious breakfast!

My awesome photographer friend, Carissa, posted photos and a recipe of pancakes the other day. Ever since I saw the photos I could think of nothing but trying to make them myself.

My photos are nowhere near as professional and great as hers, and it looks like her pancakes might have turned out better (cooking pancakes is hard!) AND I put some chocolate chips in mine… but boy did they rock! We were out of syrup (which was ok by me because I hate the stuff) but we made do. I put some butter and brown sugar on mine, but Shawn got creative and I had to snap a photo. (I also wanted Carissa to see that I made food all because of her!)

They are thick and fluffy and delicious! I over did the chocolate chips though. At first it looked like too few, but suddenly it was a little too much (for me. God, I’m getting OLD!) Shawn was happy though. I have 3 left over in the fridge so now I know what I am having as a snack tonight.

Thanks for the great recipe, Carissa! And the inspiration!
