thankful some more

Shawn and I just had a very low-key dinner – with all the trimmings! We made up the veggies, I put a cherry pie in the oven and a little after 5PM we drove on over to my parents’ place and the one healthy family member (my brother-in-law) brought us out our portion of the turkey, my stuffing and even half of the homemade pumpkin pie my sister made. Oh, and gravy!

When we drove home the veggies were ready (yes, I turned off the oven and stove before we went out) and we just heated up the stuffing and gravy a little, Shawn mashed potatoes and turnip and I put butter on the carrots.

Even with our fancy/ghetto serving dishes of glad and ziploc containers, it was still a nice meal.

The best part of having everything in those containers  is how easy it is to put away after. Heh.

And don’t say I don’t ever do anything nice for my dogs…

Yes, Annie and Jinx each got a dollop of dinner – everything was doggy safe. No onions in my stuffing and I broke the teeny bit of turkey they got up so small to make sure there were no bones to choke on. Annie loved carrots so I gave her extra since I don’t really like them myself so our left overs would have less carrot. :P

They seemed to enjoy it. ;) It’s good to have a well-balanced, healthy meal once in a while. Everything was soft enough for Annie to eat, too. (She’s been having trouble with her dry food so now she gets hamburger and rice with all her meals so she can eat… cheaper than buying wet food at $3 a pack!)

I am thankful that Shawn did all the dishes after dinner so I didn’t have to. ;)

I am even too full for dessert and I have two different pies to chose from! Crap, meant to take a photo of the pie because I made a heart in the middle of the upper crust. I’m pathetic, yes.

thanksgiving cancelled on account of illness

Believe it or not, I’m not the sick one for once! I know! I’ll bet you just lost a lot of money on that bet, huh?

So the plan for today was this:

Cat & Shawn – provide the gathering space & veggies
My parents – bring the turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce
My sister & family – bring the desserts
My in-laws – bread, rice & their dog (not for eating but for playing with!)

We should be 9 people around the table(s) tonight. Well, 8.5 since Lilly, at 4 years old, still doesn’t eat a huge portion of food.

But everyone is sick except for Shawn and I (and my mother-in-law, last we checked). So no one could come. And to be honest I just can’t afford to get sick again what with everything going on this month at work, ending with a huge fundraising gala that my office is working on.

So I am left with a crapload of veggies and no meat. Drat. Happy for me I picked up a small can of cranberry sauce when we were out buying the veggies for a “just in case someone forgets” backup. I also picked up cherry pie filling (on sale) and some Pillsbury pie pastry. So I can almost make my own Thanksgiving dinner.

My mother called and let me know she’d already made my stuffing (she makes some without onions so I do not die in the middle of dinner) and if I wanted, she had to cook the turkey anyhow, so I can come pick up my stuffing and some turkey tonight! I might even make my veggies and stuff to go with it. Shawn and I even bought WINE for tonight. So I guess we’ll have our own low-key Thanksgiving tonight.

I am thankful that due to all these illnesses I didn’t have to clean the house like a madwoman yesterday. heh

But truly, I am thankful for my family – because of them I am who I am today.

I am thankful for my husband, for without him I wouldn’t survive in this world. Also, he spoils me rotten. ;)

I am thankful for my dogs because they are always so exited to see me and it makes me feel so loved.

I am thankful for my friends – old and new – truly. You all have no idea how much your friendships mean to me. Even if I only see you every few years, or once a year or daily at work, you keep me sane and remind me why I never did give in to those suicidal thoughts years ago.

I am thankful for the roof over my head and the car in the driveway. I am thankful for the food on the table and in the fridge. I am thankful that I am alive and have found a self-confidence I never thought I would have because of the people in my life who love and accept me for who I am.

I am especially thankful for a long weekend. ;)

I honestly think of these things on a daily basis lately, but today’s the day where we Canadians write it all out and mush all over the internet. This weekend is the final harvests before the frost starts (hence having it earlier than the US, at least I’m pretty sure that’s the reason?).

I hope you all remember what you’re thankful for because there is just too much negative in the world these days, so much sadness and unfairness, that it’s hard to remember sometimes, just what it is you love about the world.

And I, love you all. *mush mush mush*
